"My schedule will be very busy for the foreseeable future. I am looking to take on these new adventures with great enthusiasm."

This quote is from a post from September 1, 2008. Ten months without really taking a breather. From September to June, I worked full time, took classes, and attempted to stay sane. I had a couple of weeks in June with work ending (school's over for the summer) where I was able to relax somewhat. I used that time to organize and clean some stuff at home. Not completely relaxing, but I didn't have to do anything else. Last weekend began my extensive traveling excursions for the summer.

I drove to Missouri to visit friends ([info]glithander  and [info]laurald ).  The drive from eastern Michigan to western Missouri was long and uneventful.  Same for the drive home.  Good in that I had no trouble.  Bad in that there was not much to look at.  It was good to be with close friends for the weekend.  We were able to catch up, see some of the sights of the Kansas City area, and just hang out.  They'll be visiting Michigan in August, so it won't be too long until I see them again.  Not a whole year.

I'll spend this weekend at Fort Niagara in New York.  I'll be camping with others for a French and Indian War reenactment.  I'll get there Thursday afternoon and return home Sunday evening.  I've never been to that area, so it will be my first time seeing Niagara Falls.  I am looking forward to the experience of the entire weekend.  Camping, early colonial living, shooting cannons, fireworks.

The next weekend finds me in Toronto for Polaris.  Polaris is a large convention in the Toronto area each summer.  Right after this trip, I take my state test for the Special Education: Learning Disabilities endorsement and my final class for said endorsement.  Right now, August looks somewhat uneventful.  I'll post more after each event.  I could post more about my trip to Missouri, but it is late and I need to sleep before the trip later in the morning.

Have a great 4th of July weekend!

This was in today's local news:

The National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac has issued a Winter Storm Watch which is in effect from Sunday evening through Monday afternoon.

Rain will spread into the area late Sunday and then change to snow Sunday evening as a low pressure system tracks into the area. This snow may become heavy at times Sunday night, and then persist into Monday before taper off to snow showers. Total accumulations of 6 to 10 inches will be possible. North to northwest winds will also gust to near 30 mph by Monday.

A Winter Storm Watch means there is a potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact travel. Continue to monitor the latest forecasts.

6 to 10 inches of snow?!  In April!!  I'm sitting here looking at the beautiful blue sky, no clouds.  It is windy today, so a little cool (low 50's).  I guess we will have to wait and see if we do get this storm.

Your Word is "Why"

You see life as complicated and intriguing. The only thing you know for sure is that you haven't figured it all out yet.

You question everything and believe very little. And whatever you believe is likely to change.

You are interested in theories, philosophies, and religions... even if you don't buy into any of them.

You are also fascinated by how things work. You'd like to understand as much in the world as possible.

In reference to the complaining paragraph I edited out of my previous post.

I was writing about how everyone seems to think that things will change this new year.  I heard it constantly from various sources that things will be better this year.  Many people see that a change in figureheads in government will improve life for everyone.  Many seem to think that 2008 was as low as things can ever be with many situations.  I heard much whining, complaining, crying, and fearful statements made during 2008.  We heard it everywhere for the last six months that change is coming.  At the end of January, we can sit back, relax, and let the changes bring us to a glorious new age.  Yeah, right.

I think it will be safe to say that we'll hear much complaining come mid summer when many of the situations (job loss, home foreclosures, high gas prices) are still occurring.  These things cannot magically change overnight.  We cannot expect change if we sit back and expect other people to make it happen.  We'll hear many people who had it bad last year complain because they did not receive the magical handout of change that they think will come their way.  Change comes from us making it happen.  If we want something different to happen, then we need to make the difference.  It is easier to whine about something not going my way than it is to change it to my liking.  Change takes effort and time.  Change is not easy.  Change is not always good.  In order to make change happen, we sometimes have to take a step back in order to work on improving situations.  Many won't make the effort or think they don't have the time.  Others just play follow the leader.

Putting it bluntly:  Shut up, and do something about it.  I am tired of the complaining.  Make personal changes to improve your life and happiness.  If you can, make changes to improve others' life or happiness.  We need to get out of the doom and gloom, fear mongering of 2008 and get to a happier, richer 2009.  Make your new year's resolutions to create change in one aspect of your life that you have always wanted to change for the better.  Stick to that resolution.  It may be tough, but make it happen.  Create change.

Slept in today, as I did not get home until 3AM.  I was down in Detroit at the Fox Theatre to see the Barenaked Ladies in concert for New Year's Eve.  A really good and fun show.  It was like a greatest hits show as they sang most of their hits.  As usual, they added some material that they only do at their concerts.  I have never been to a large New Year's Eve event before, so this was exciting just for the experience of being surrounded by a large crowd celebrating at once.  My ears are still ringing slightly.

2008 passed away.  It was an okay year.  It had its good and bad moments.  For me, nothing life changing, earth shattering, nor shocking happened.  I know it has been a rough year for some.  I guess I'm lucky in that I didn't have to worry about losing my job or house.

Many people are looking forward to 2009 as a year of change.  (Edited out  a whole paragraph complaining about people.  Didn't want to change the tone of this post, so will post this thought later).  I hope everyone has a good upcoming year.  Make it a fun year with memorable experiences.

Some background information to set up the story:  I'm taking classes through Wayne State University again.  I have two classes with one on Monday evening and the other on Tuesday evening (both 5-8:30pm).  I drive back and forth from Port Huron to Detroit about an hour each way.  This past weekend I came down with a cold and sinus pressure.

Tuesday evening, I'm returning home after class.  I ran out of tissues in my car, so I have nothing to blow my nose on.  Not even thinking of using my sleeves.  Sinuses are pounding from the pressure, so I think I need to stop and buy some tissue to relieve the pressure.  I pull into the nearest Meijer I see.

Entering the store, I think "In and out.  One box of tissue.  No big deal."  Walking down the main aisle of the grocery section, I read the signs to find the paper goods section.  Keep walking.  And walking.  The facial tissue section is the farthest section away from the entrance.  A dark little corner reserved for rectangular boxes not fit to see the light of day.  I guess exposure to direct sunlight may cause the tissue to discolor?  I don't know.  With box in hand, I trudge back to the entrance to pay for it.

This Meijer removed all of their Express checkouts for the Self serve scanners.  Apparently after 9pm, everyone likes to use the self serve.  There was a lineup to use these checkouts with people buying bulk items.  People with carts full of toilet paper, dog food, and other large items.  I think to myself "I am not waiting in line.  I'll move on to find something quicker."  I walk halfway down the row of checkouts to the next open checkout.  There is only one woman in line, and she is paying for her stuff.  Quick in and out.  This woman was buying 4 six packs of soda pop and a chocolate bar.  A fast purchase?  No.  This woman decides she will pay with loose change.  I don't mean just rolls of quarters, but any loose change she finds in her purse.  I stood in line for what seemed like forever while she pulled money out of every nook and cranny she could find.  Once she collected enough to pay for her items, the cashier had to count every last cent to determine if there was enough.  Transaction taken care of, the woman leaves and it is my turn.

As soon as I get to the cashier, all the phones begin ringing.  The cashier backs away and says that I have to wait.  I wait while the manager goes to each cashier and exchanges their cash drawer.  Of course being somewhere in the middle, I have to wait for him to make his way slowly to my checkout.  When he arrives, he has to go through every detail of closing a drawer and opening a new one with the cashier.  This takes a good 5-10 minutes.  I'm standing there wondering if this is all real.  What kind of place did I step into?  Exchange finished, I am able to purchase one box of facial tissue.  I return to my car, relieve the pressure, and wonder just what part of the Twilight Zone I stepped into for that brief moment.  I had not taken any medication, so I know I was not hallucinating.  Wasted a good 20-30 minutes for one brief stop.  A couple days later I am still scratching my head wondering.

Current Music: Dead Can Dance - Ariadne
It was not the worst experience of my life.  It won't be listed in my memoirs as one of the most memorable events in my life either.  I made it through the evening with only one actual moment of eyerolling boredom due to the conversation.

I arrived to the reunion which had many of the attendees already there.  I checked in and was immediately dragged into conversation about "what are you up to these days?"  I had some good conversations with people as they filled me in on their life and I with mine.  There was some reminiscing with old friends who I have not spoken with in a very long time.  Interesting to see how some people changed over time.  Honestly, many of the people changed very little over 20 years.  Many of these people still lived near the small town where we lived and went to school.  There were no great breakthrough stories of anyone doing great things.  There was conversation during dinner and after as well.  Dinner was decent with a lot of good food.

I would say that the majority of the conversation at the reunion was everyone talking about their children.  It was good to hear that most of the people there were married with 2-4 children.  They could share stories about family life (marriage, children, domestic stuff).  Since I have not chosen that path of life, I could not connect or share with many of these people.  They asked if I was married or had children.  When I said no, they tended to pause, say "Oh", and attempt to talk about something else.  The eyerolling occurred during dinner when the conversation turned to dishwashers.  In my mind all I could think was "These people are excited by appliances.  I thought my life was dull, but this is unreal."  I tried to make it a positive evening which it was for the most part.

It was nice to meet up with these people again, but I felt that time had moved on.  They were not strangers, yet I felt that I didn't know these people anymore.  I don't foresee myself meeting up anytime soon.  If chance allows us to meet again, I will take the time to make the most of it.  I will not go out of my way to attempt to hook up with these people.  They have their lives and I have mine.  It doesn't make any sense to me to renew these acquaintances that lay dormant for two decades.  I have plenty of good friends that I can relate to and share exciting experiences at any time.

Maybe I'll see you in another 20 years Yale High School Class of 1988.  Then you can fill me in on the number of grandchildren you have.  I cannot wait for that (he adds sarcastically).

Tonight I attend my 20 year high school reunion.  I am not looking forward to attending this event.  Why?  I have not spoken to any of these people in at least 18 years.  The only thing that we have in common was we graduated from the same school 20 years ago.  I am not going to renew any friendships, respark any long lost love with a high school sweetheart, nor brag how much I accomplished since graduation.  All I'm hoping to get out of this reunion is a decent meal.  Seriously.

I had a decent time while attending school.  I had plenty of friends, participated in many activities, did well in my classes, and have some really good memories.  There were the ups and downs that everyone has during their teenage high school years.  Upon reflection, I realize that those are normal events that occur while one grows through that stage of life.  I am not going with any fears nor resentments about things that occurred 20+ years ago.  I know some will reflect upon those years as it was the highlight of their life.  Others will tell of their accomplishments since graduation.  They will speak of their careers, family, husbands, wives, children (oh boy, look at the pictures), travels, who they know, met or work with, on and on, etc.  If I really cared about them, I would have kept up with that stuff over these past 20 years.  I will be polite, but honestly I could care less.  I may sound harsh, but I developed strong relationships, friendships with many people since those days.  People that  I really care about.  I will not be seeing those people tonight.  As a matter of fact, I am skipping a couple events ([info]dblaser_ca  "Unbirthday Barbeque" party and a trip to Michigan's Renaissance Festival) with these good friends to attend this reunion.  Many of my current friends advised me to attend the reunion knowing my feelings.  I just hope that I find something positive at tonight's gathering.

I will post how my evening went later.  I just need to remember to breathe, smile, nod, and not express my boredom/irritation outright.

September brings some changes to my life.  I return to school tomorrow (September  2).  Continuing my classes for an endorsement in special education with two classes for a total of 8 credit hours.  Each class runs from 5-9 pm Monday and Tuesday.  Those will be very long days.  I return to work tomorrow too.  Sort of.  I actually returned to work last Wednesday, but I'm counting tomorrow as the first day of return since that is when the students will be in the classroom.  I'll be teaching Biology at PH Northern while the teacher is filling in as one of the assistant principals.  The AP is filling in as principal while he is out taking care of his wife who has cancer.  I am mostly excited about the position as it gets me into the classroom again teaching the subject that I have a degree in.  I am not looking forward to the early mornings though.  I have not been awake before 8 am since school ended in June, so it will be tough to adjust this first week.

My schedule will be very busy for the foreseeable future.  I am looking to take on these new adventures with great enthusiasm.

Saturday brings about my 20 year high school reunion.  I'll comment about that in another post.

I had a friend comment about me not updating my Livejournal enough. This was a few months back. Of course, I still don't post any new content to my LJ. I was sitting around today when the thought struck me on why I possibly don't write here very often. I think it is the style of communication that blogs and email and even the telephone provide to people. Sure, it relays information to people, but I find something lacking in this communication.

I prefer to speak to people face to face where I receive another aspect of human communication through facial expressions and body language. There is a level of communication that is lost without those aspects. I like to know if a person is genuinely interested or sincere or bullshitting me. On the phone, one can infer the emotion behind the other person's words, but there is still part of the communication lost. I know I've made up stuff on the phone to feign interest in what the other person was saying. I know many people who became upset/angry by an email, blog, or comment because the entire message is not properly conveyed in mere words.

I read my email and LJ friends at least once a day to keep up with people. I rarely comment on their writings as I don't feel it to be an open conversation to add my opinion. I respond to personal email that the person expects a response. I just don't jump at every opportunity to make a comment. For some people, my lack of comments seems as if I don't read their writings or I just don't care about them. Here we have a lack of words implying some message. I listen/read what others say/write, but to me it seems impersonal (even when you use emoticons) ;p

I'll update when something interesting happens or some deep thoughts need bouncing around. As of right now, I'll return to my cave in anticipation of the season finale of "Doctor Who" on Saturday. And in two weeks, Polaris.

Wow!

It has been a long, long time since I updated on this. I realize I have been busy with many things, but I have not updated since like December.

I have just a few things that come to mind. I finished this semester of school this week. After much late night, last minute, procrastinating, head shaking, paper shredding, headache and stress filled hours, I turned in my final projects with much trepidation. I thought they were some of the worst work that I turned in for a grade. Apparently, I did well, since I received my grades today. I passed both classes. Oh yeah, I was taking two classes during the winter semester. I am working on renewing my teaching certificate (just have to send in the paperwork to the state now), working on special education endorsement in learning disabilities (finish next spring), and working on master’s degree (Winter 2010).

One reason I have not updated here: I was sick of writing so many papers that I did not want to touch another keyboard ever again.

I enjoyed Penguicon. It was great to see everyone there. Of course, I have not slept well since then. I had too much fun to sleep at a normal hour during that weekend. I am slowly returning to a mundane sleep routine, but it has been a difficult couple of weeks to recover.

I am working until the end of the school year (June 13). I took over a part time (2 classes) position in March. It is going okay. I am the fourth teacher in this position, so the students are intolerable about the change. Everyone is counting the days until the end.

I will try to post more now that I have some free time. I just need to catch up with everything else at the same time too.

Until later.

#31 Going Postal by Terry Pratchett

#32 Dead Witch Walking, #33 The Good, the Bad, and the Undead, and #34 Every Which Way but Dead by Kim Harrison

I am really enjoying this series by Kim Harrison.  Her world is very believable, and her characters are truly interesting.  I still need to read the next two books in the series yet.  It was a highlight at Conclave 32 to meet this author and learn of the details/background of these stories.

#35 The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and other stories by Robert Louis Stevenson

Different than what I expected.  Strange how the myth has changed from the original story.  The basic story of dual personalities or characters emerging from the same person is there, but presented slightly different than any movie/tv version I have ever watched.  It was an interesting read.  I really enjoyed the other stories included in this collection:  The Suicide Club, Thrawn Janet, and Markheim.  Nice and spooky.

I don't believe I'll make my goal of reading 50 books this year since we only have about a week left to the year.  I might be able to read two more before the end of the year, but that would be about it.  Returning to school this past fall along with work really stalled my reading for pleasure.  Not that I'm complaining, but my time was dedicated to those more rewarding endeavors.  This was a good exercise for me to see how many books I could and do read in one year.  I may continue this for next year to compare the results and see what my average reading rate is.

I hope everyone has an enjoyable holiday.
